How to Identify Bed Bugs
Adult bed bugs are about the size of an apple seed, approximately 3/16” long, and reddish-brown, with flat, oval-shaped bodies. They are sometimes mistaken for ticks, cockroaches, carpet beetles, fleas, or other insects. Young bed bugs resemble adults, but are smaller and lighter in color. Bed bugs do not fly or jump like fleas do, but they are rapid crawlers and hide in bedding, upholstery seams, hems, and cracks.
Adult female bed bugs produce potentially hundreds of eggs in their lifetime. The eggs are tiny specs, pale, and hard to see without a magnifying glass, especially on light surfaces. When first laid, bed bug eggs are sticky, causing them to adhere to surfaces. Typically, bed bug eggs hatch in about a week. Newly emerged bed bugs are straw-colored and no bigger than a pinhead.
